RSA vials (Reduced Surface Activity Glass) from MicroSolv are specially deactivated vials for sensitive samples. As the deactivation of the glass surface is not achieved with a coating or silanisation, these vials are also ideal for MS detection.
Due to the special glass, there is no change in pH value due to "acidic" silanols in the glass. Because of the hydrophobic surface, no meniscus forms in aqueous samples.
In addition to vials, inserts for smaller volumes in vials and 96-well plates are also available.
A test solution was filled into 3 sets of vials (N1, N2 & N3) of each brand. The starting concentration of the test solution is 5µg/mL. After a standing time of 4h in the vials, the final concentration was determined by HPLC.
For the pH test, water with pH 5.45 was added to the vial and the pH value was measured again after 4 hours.

RSA vials show a lower loss of sample compared to other vials. This leads to more accurate results in the analysis. In addition, the pH value in this test shifted by only 0.05 units. As a result, pH sensitive samples can be measured more reliably. Other vials show a loss of sample of up to 54% and a pH shift of more than 1.25 units
