Syringe filters are an essential tool in laboratories for filtering and cleaning samples prior to analysis. They are placed on the tip of a syringe and remove particles or impurities from a liquid to prevent clogging of the analytical columns and extend the life of the analytical instrument. These filters are available in different pore sizes for different requirements. They are crucial for precise analytical procedures and help to increase the reliability and accuracy of measurements.
In the MZ-Analysentechnik GmbH range you will find syringe filters from manufacturers such as La-Pha-Pack, Thermo Fisher Scientific and GS-Tek. In addition to our online range, we also stock low-cost filters from international manufacturers. We will be happy to help you in your search for suitable filters!
The housings of syringe filters are usually made of high-purity polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (HD-PE), which have high chemical stability and contain only very low levels of extractable substances. The filters are available in different sizes depending on the sample quantity to be filtered. The table opposite is intended as an aid to selecting the correct filter size.
Filter Diameter | Recommended sample volume |
3 or 4 mm | <1 mL |
13 mm | 1 - 10 mL |
17 mm | 5 - 50 mL |
25 mm | 5 - 100 mL |
30 or 33 mm | 10 - 100 mL |
The filter membranes are available in a variety of different materials. These should be selected correctly depending on the solvent to be filtered and the sample, as not all materials have sufficient chemical stability in some solvents, see table below. To protect the main filter membrane from large particles and thus prevent premature clogging of the filters, some syringe filters are also available with glass fibre pre-filters. These are particularly suitable for heavily contaminated samples.
