Ghost Buster Columns

####MAGENTO-BREADCRUMBS####

The Ghost Buster column is a newly developed Ghost-Guard column from Welch Materials, Shanghai. Ghost-Guard columns are special HPLC columns that effectively remove non-polar impurities from the mobile phase and thus solve the problem of unwanted ghost peaks or poor baselines. The unwanted ghost peaks can occur especially during a gradient or after a long run time of the system. When using the previous Ghost Buster column from Welch, obvious fluctuations in the baseline can sometimes occur during gradient elution. When using the new Ghost Buster II column, this problem is eliminated. The Ghost Buster II columns show a stronger retention of impurities due to an optimised stationary phase.

The Ghost Buster column is installed between the mixer (after the pump) and before the injector. The sample does not have to pass through the Ghost Guard column, as only non-polar impurities are to be removed from the mobile phase.

Precautions

  1. Install the column between the mixer and injector. Installation after the injector would cause strong adsorption on the samples and impair the analysis.
  2. For new analytical columns, rinse the ghost buster column with an 80% methanol solution at 1ml/min for 20 minutes before inserting the new column into the system.
  3. Not all impurities can be adsorbed by the ghost buster column.
  4. Solvents with ion pairs in the mobile phase can be adsorbed by the Ghost Buster column and affect retention and peak shape. Please use the column with caution in such mobile phases.
  5. The lifetime of the column depends on the analytical conditions, the mobile phase and the purity of the solvent. It is recommended to change the Ghost Buster column regularly to ensure performance.
  6. The ghost buster column is more of a cleaning part of the system to filter out impurities and protect the column and system.
  7. Flush the column with high percentage water before and after using buffer salts in the mobile phase to prevent the buffer salts from precipitating and blocking the column.
  8. If the ghost buster column performs unsatisfactorily, try disconnecting the outlet of the column and rinsing with 100 % acetonitrile.
